WHAT WALL TYPE?

SOLID WALL

If your home was built before 1919, your home is most likely constructed with solid walls.

Solid Wall insulation is carried out through either internal or external wall insulation, which can be more effective than cavity wall insulation. Keeping your home warm and significantly reducing your heating bills.

Want to find out more?

There are two types of solid wall insulation.

They are as follows:

INTERNAL

Installing insulation within the internal property walls, also known as dry lining, effectively reduces heat loss. Most property types are suitable for this type of insulation, and the process is straightforward and hassle-free.

EXTERNAL

External wall insulation is a layer of insulation fixed to the outside walls of your home. It creates a layer around your home, limiting heat from escaping in the winter and keeping your home cooler in the summer.

TYPE ONE OF SOLID WALL INSULATION

INTERNAL

Internal wall insulation is done by fitting rigid insulation boards to the internal wall or building a stud wall filled with insulation materials such as mineral wool fibre.

PREPARATION

Sometimes we may need to remove certain fixtures, such as door frames or skirting boards, and reattach them once finished.

THE PROCESS

Internal insulation on solid walls can be undertaken one room at a time, making the process more manageable and easier to plan.

COMPLICATIONS

Due to the thickness of the insulation, your floor area can reduce by around 100mm.

EFFECTS

It can also make heavy items such as large picture frames or decorations more complicated to hang on your wall.

TYPE TWO OF SOLID WALL INSULATION

EXTERNAL

External insulation on solid walls involves applying insulation boards to the outside wall.

Which is then covered with render and reinforcing mesh and sometimes cladding.

INSTALLATION

The installation can be done without any real disruption to the building

PREPARATION

Sometimes pipework will need removing or extending, and temporary downpipes can be installed, resulting in no real disruption.

WATERPROOFING

Installing external insulation to your solid walls improves your home heating and creates a waterproof barrier that protects the brickwork and reduces draughts.

REDUCING DAMPNESS

This type of insulation also reduces dampness and improves your house's appearance, often making it look good as new.

BENEFIT

Another benefit of external insulation is that it does not reduce any room space or usable floor space within the building.

PLANNING PERMISSIONS

Although, in some cases, external wall insulation may require planning permission which can be time-consuming and potentially be rejected.

SUITABILITY

Furthermore, external wall insulation will not be suitable if the walls are damaged or structurally unsound.
